1934 World Series Replay: Dean and Done

In the actual 1934 World Series, Dizzy Dean and his brother, Paul1He hated the nickname “Daffy.” each won two games as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers in seven games.

In my Strat-O-Matic replay of the 1934 World Series, Ol’ Diz has already won two games and Paul goes to the mound in Game Six in Detroit. Dizzy’s younger, taciturn sibling was just 21 when he won 19 games and pitched a no-hitter for the Cardinals that season, but injuries shortened his promising career. Paul won 38 games in his first two seasons in the majors, but only 12 more in the six seasons that followed2Though he did have a terrific 19-8, 2.05 ERA season for Minneapolis in 1942..

But 1934 was magic, and Paul looked to continue that at Briggs Stadium. Find out what happened below.

Daffy Does It! Cardinals Rule Roost

DETROIT (Oct. 8, 1934) – Paul Dean pitched a four-hitter and the St.Louis Cardinals broke open a tight game with five sixth-inning runs to defeat the Detroit Tigers 7-1 Monday afternoon at Briggs Stadium and win the World Series, four games to two.

Jack Rothrock and Frankie Frisch drove in runs in the top of the first to stake the National League champions to a 2-0 lead and Dean made those two runs stand up. He struck out Billy Rogell with two on and two out in the first, got Goose Goslin to fly to center with runners at first and third and two out in the third and stranded Mickey Cochrane at second after the Tiger catcher and manager doubled leading off the sixth.

By that time, the Cardinals had erupted for five runs on Bill Delancey‘s two-run home run and a Frisch’s bases-loaded triple that turned the game into a 7-0 rout and chased Tiger starter Schoolboy Rowe to the showers.

Charlie Gehringer singled home pinch-runner Heine Schuble with two out in the eighth, but Dean pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, retiring Marv Owen on a grounder to second base to give the Cardinals their second World Series title in four years.

The Dean brothers were named co-Most Valuable Players of the series, with Dizzy going 2-0 with a 3.50 ERA (and five hits in eight at bats) and Paul recording a 2-0 record with a 2.00 ERA. The Cardinals hit .300 as a team in the six games.
