The early Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t just lose – they epitomized losing. But the story behind their infamous 26-game losing streak is far more complex than just an expansion team’s roster of young players and journeymen.
At the center was John McKay, a legendary college coach who brought credibility – and controversy – to the Bay Area. Known for his sharp wit, McKay could charm reporters but alienate players. As Jason Vuic, author of “The Yucks: Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History,” explains, his humor often came at the expense of his own team, creating tension that lingered for decades. His insistence on running a college-style offense, and his hubris, made for a dangerous combination.
On today’s 50th anniversary of the first regular-season game in team history, Jason and I examine the many reasons the early Bucs couldn’t win. You’ll hear stories you may never have heard before – including the assistant coach who quit during a game and went home. It’s all in the video below, the first longform content from my new YouTube channel, Classic Tampa Bay Moments.
