WRUF-AM
My career began at WRUF-AM 850, one of three campus radio stations at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.(You can find out more about WRUF’s history here.) I did late nights, morning-drive, and, later, afternoon-drive sports during my junior year at school. Some of those sportscasts are preserved here. (Click to play)
Baseball
You’d think I would have done more baseball, given my affinity for the game. But the pace of the game has never suited me as a broadcaster. This is part of a game I did color on in college at the University of Florida on WRUF-AM.
Hockey
Venturing into hockey broadcasting was a bit of a stretch for me. Growing up in Florida, I didn’t have many opportunities to watch or listen to hockey, but I saw a chance when one was presented, and spent the winter of 1993-1994 as the radio voice of the Indianapolis Ice of the International Hockey League on WNDE-AM 1260. We only did a partial schedule, which I worked around my duties as a sports reporter for WRTV-6. Most of those game broadcasts survive, and you can listen to any of them below.
Indoor Soccer
Perhaps because of that hockey experience (and perhaps because there was little interest from anyone else, and I was first to get in line), I became the first radio play-by-play announcer in the short life of the Indianapolis (later Indiana) Twisters of the Continental Indoor Soccer League on WMYS-AM. In 1996 and 1997, I broadcasted nearly every game with the help of the best producer in the business, John Culver. Most of these games have survived as well. (There’s even the opening segment of the weekly talk show we used to do.)
Let’s Twist Again
A new podcast I started in June 2025 is a monthly deep dive into the short-lived Indiana Twisters. Each episode features a guest who lived those eventful two years as we take a trip down Memory Lane.
High School Basketball
Some of the most fun I ever had was doing high school basketball on the radio in Indiana for very little money. I had great partners, got to broadcast some fun games from some cool gyms, and had great support.
Semi-Pro Football
Doing those high school basketball games provided the opportunity to do a couple semi-pro football games. Almost all of one of them has survived.
Major League Soccer
I broke into Major League Soccer with the Chicago Fire on WBIG-AM in Aurora, Ill. in 2003, and eventually became the club’s internet and television broadcaster.
More Indoor Soccer
Seven years after my first foray into indoor soccer broadcasting, I was back at it as the internet and TV voice of the Chicago Storm of the (second) Major Indoor Soccer League. I did basically every game the first year and home games the second year.
Sports Talk Radio
I filled in occasionally on WINK Sportstalk on WINK-AM 1240 in Fort Myers, Fla. when I worked for its sister station, WINK-TV. For one winter (1997-98), I also had a weekend show syndicated state-wide on Network Indiana.
Various Podcasts
From time to time, I’ll just do a podcast because it interests me.
