All-Time ASL I Standings

A work in progress, the standings for the original (1921-1933) American Soccer League, based on the great original research of Colin Jose, Mark Wheeler and Dave Litterer.

The ASL’s very existence was only a legend well into the 1970s, by which time the second ASL was more than 40 years old and attempting to be a viable alternative to the growing North American Soccer League. In 1980’s The American Encyclopedia of Soccer, author Zander Hollander wrote:

“Information is sketchy, and memories have clouded, but several old-timers interviewed in 1978 recalled a ‘soccer war of 1931’ and an old ‘American Soccer League’ in the 1920s.”

Jose’s 1998 book, American Soccer League 1921-1931 is the definitive (and very hard to find) tome on the original league. The standings below are from this book, though they do have errors that will be noted within the charts as we work through them.

By the time the ASL played what was intended to be the second half of its 1932-33 season, it was down to just four teams. One, Bohemian Queens, played just one match and was supplanted by another called the Prague Americans, who played the rest of the double round-robin. This would be the last gasp of the original ASL.

Playoffs:
02/22/1928 – New Bedford 2, Bethlehem 0 (2,500) at Fall River, Mass.
The original plan was for the top two finishers in the season’s first half to join the top two finishers from the second half in a four-team playoff to determine the 1927-28 ASL champion. When New Bedford and Bethlehem finished tied for second place in the first half, the two teams met to determine the second spot.
*The financially ailing Philadelphia club dropped out of the league Oct. 18, 1927.
#Hartford was persuaded to drop out Oct. 24, 1927 to balance the 11-team league.

Playoffs:
06/04/1928 – BETHLEHEM 2, New York Nationals 1
06/06/1928 – Bethlehem 4, NEW YORK NATIONALS 0
With New Bedford having qualified through the second-place playoff in the season’s first half, the league decreed that Fall River and New York, the second- and third-place finishers in the second half, would stage a two-legged playoff for the fourth and final semifinal spot. Bethlehem’s 5-3 win on aggregate set up a two-legged semifinal meeting with Boston, while New Bedford would meet Fall River.

06/09/1928 – NEW BEDFORD 3, Fall River 1
06/10/1928 – FALL RIVER 1, New Bedford 0 (New Bedford advanced 3-2 on aggregate)

06/09/1928 – BOSTON 3, Bethlehem 1
06/12/1928 – BETHLEHEM 4, Boston 0
While Bethlehem seemed to have advanced with a stunning 5-3 aggregate win, their second-leg victory was overturned because they had used an ineligible player, goalkeeper Steve Smith, signed at the last minute as an injury replacement without league approval. That send Boston through to the final.

06/16/1928 – BOSTON 4, New Bedford 2 (2,000)

Also, Springfield resigned from the league after 27 games. Its remaining 17 games were forfeited, with the points awarded to Bethlehem, Philadelphia, and J&P Coats (6 each), New Bedford and Indiana (4 each), Fall River, Boston, New York Giants and Brooklyn (2 each). Providence and Newark had already completed playing Springfield, so they received no forfeit points.
