The Indiana Twisters existed for only two seasons, but for those who lived it, the memories are lasting. In the latest episode of Let’s Twist Again, I got to reconnect with my former broadcast partner, Dan Kapsalis, for a wide-ranging conversation about the Twisters, the CISL, and how soccer in Indiana has changed over the past 30 years.
Dan shares how he was pulled into the Twisters’ orbit in 1996, jumping from local soccer circles into radio broadcasts during a time when professional indoor soccer was still finding its footing in Indianapolis. Together, we revisited the highs and lows of that first season, from sparse crowds to gritty performances, and the breakthrough 1997 squad that went on a memorable mid-season run.
Beyond the Twisters, Dan offers thoughtful insight into youth and high school soccer, the rise of elite academies, and what has been lost (and gained) as the game has evolved. A highlight is Dan’s unforgettable “One Crazy Story” from his freshman year at Indiana University, a reminder that even Hall of Famers start somewhere.
