Revisiting the wild summer of 1996

Episode 12 of Let’s Twist Again takes a different approach — revisiting the Twisters’ unforgettable inaugural season through stories told by those lived it.

Over the first eleven episodes of the show, our guests have shared incredible memories about that expansion season: how the team came together, what life was like inside Market Square Arena, and how a group of players and staff navigated one of the most unusual seasons in professional indoor soccer history.

In this episode, we went back to that summer to bring you some of the incredible stories our guests have brought to the table over the first year of this show.

You’ll hear about:

  • The origins of the Twisters’ name
  • Where players came from
  • That first training camp and what coach Jorge Espinoza expected from his players (and how players got around them)
  • High points and low points
  • The owner who joined the team as a player
  • The crazy last month of the season with the league operating the team

Part of what has made Let’s Twist Again so much fun is reconnecting with old friends and uncovering the stories that have become funnier or more poignant with the passage of time. For some, it was their first experience in professional soccer. For others, it was a life-changing summer filled with friendships, unforgettable games, and memories that still feel vivid decades later.
