I don’t think I’ll ever get over Sandro Grande

Sandro Grande of the Montreal Impact chokes out a teammate.

No, you can’t choke a teammate. No. doesn’t sit well with your club.

Sandro Grande found that out the hard way, as he’s been released from the Montreal Impact, a week after this altercation with teammate Mauro Biello.

What’s interesting is that the above photo was actually the thing that led to the suspension and, later, the release. Apparently, it happened so quickly that no one on the bench or on the field except for goalkeeper Matt Jordan (the man in the middle there) saw it. Kudos to photographer Jeremy Olson for being on the spot and capturing the money shot.

I doubt Grande feels Olson deserves congratulations, but what can you do?

In other USL news:

  • The Minnesota Thunder are apparently having some cash flow issues. This is one of the longest-tenured pro clubs in America, we don’t need them to have financial difficulties that threaten the franchise.
  • Ten years after becoming the only USL team in the post-MLS era to win a US Open Cup, the Rochester Rhinos get a chance to return to the final tonight as they take on DC United in one semifinal. Houston and Seattle play in the other.
  • Did you know the Portland Timbers had set a USL-1 record by going unbeaten in 16 straight matches? I didn’t. Congrats to them.
