Long before the Super Bowl, the 1938 New York Giants etched their name in NFL history. Their punishing defense, large crowds at the iconic Polo Grounds, and hard-fought championship run have been overlooked for decades — until now.
My new YouTube channel, Sports Rewind, focuses on the overlooked and under-appreciated in sports history. In the first episode, historians Larry Schmitt and Mike Moran join me for an in-depth look at the 1938 Giants. The first team to win two official championship games in the NFL’s divisional era, the Giants had one of the best defenses in football history, and overcame tragedy to made a thrilling march to the title despite having only two Hall of Famers on their roster.
With the aid of (probably) never-before-seen film of that Giants season – from training camp to championship game – Larry, Mike and I do a deep dive into the players, strategies, formations and highlights of that season to see how New York did it, and how they captivated Depression-era New York.
