1953 World Series Replay Game Two

1953 World Series

I’m replaying the 1953 World Series with the APBA Pro Baseball game, returning to a hobby I enjoyed in my youth while I sort out a new life here in Arizona. The Yankees took the first game, 10-1 (in real life, they had won that game 9-5) and looked to go up 2-0 in game two at Yankee Stadium on the first day of October.

BERRA’S BLASTS BREAK BROOKLYN, 6-2, IN GAME TWO

NEW YORK (Oct. 1, 1953)Yogi Berra hit two home runs to back the five-hit pitching of Eddie Lopat, leading the New York Yankees to a 6-2 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers in game two of the 1953 World Series at Yankee Stadium this afternoon. The win puts the Bronx Bombers halfway to their 16th world championship and fifth in a row.

Berra drilled a solo home run to right leading off the second off Dodger starter Preacher Roe (0-1), then hit a three-run shot to left with two out in the fifth as the Yankees broke open a 2-1 game.

Lopat (1-0) gave up solo shots to Roy Campanella in the fourth and Pee Wee Reese leading off the ninth, but retired 19 of 20 hitters at one point in front of a crowd of 66,786.

The Subway Series shifts now to Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field, where the Dodgers went 60-17 during the regular season, on the way to a 105-49 record that was the best in baseball. Whitey Ford (18-6 during the season) will pitch for the Yankees, while Brooklyn will counter with 15-game-winner Russ Meyer.
